I will be making images of this guy every three months for the next year. It was great to finally meet the Gentry family and I am looking forward to recording the growth of their son in his first year of life. He is 5 days old in this series–amazing how small we all are when we’re brand new.
My birthday is on Tuesday–I turn 28. Seeing as how I’ll be out a lot this week, I wanted to go ahead and take the time to post this. Not so much a best of, but these are images that I really like and are really close to what I saw in my mind when I first captured them. As you can tell from my engagement sessions, the couples do a fair amount of kissing–I think it’s a good thing and (so far) everyone has enjoyed kissing their future spouse while having someone take pictures of them.
A couple of images really stand out to me–the one with downtown Nashville in the background and a couple of the ones at the Parthenon. I favor those images over some of the other ones because they convey something really grand–to me the sense of scale is just awesome. Thanks for reading–two more events this month alone, with a lot more to write about in the coming months. I also hope to incorporate the use of film more as well (Amberbock picture is film, not digital).
If you like any of these, want to see more, or just want to say hello, please leave a comment and let me know what’s on your mind — Paul
This shot was actually from the last engagement session I did, but I just now got around to posting this image. It’s actually 25 shots stitched together in photoshop. Robbie & Jennifer were awesome to photograph–and I had fun doing it in the freezing cold. I brought handwarmers for them, but I think Jennifer monopolized the warmth for the entire session. I’m looking forward to their wedding this summer–guaranteed to be a warm event.
Finally able to post a few images from the other engagement session I did last weekend. I’m shooting the wedding of this awesome couple this summer. You can see the Parthenon in these images, but the other pictures were shot in west Nashville. I had never done pictures at the Parthenon before, so I really wanted to convey the scale of just how huge this building is.
The one with the tree @ the end was done just after sunset and I really like it as it is a little different from everything else. The tree actually sits on state property (1/4 mile from a prison)–and we were greeted by security on our way back to our cars. No trouble though–and the resulting images turned out really great. Thanks guys for putting up with the near freezing temperatures!
great set. love the two shots with the columns and the last shot.
Awesome session Paul — The shots in the dry grass are truly amazing !!!
Lovely set! I really like the one of them with the two big columns and the ones in the grass. :)
Some great images! Love the last shot of them under the tree, classic.
Wonderful set of images, I like all the space in the images too, it allows the image to breathe.
Love the last few pics in the session, such a cool location.
Absolutely amazing photos Paul. I really like the last one.
Love the last one! Simple, great use of negative space!
Those are beautiful, and your locations are stunning!
That last shot is seriously great!
I love the last 4 images, awesome work!!
Love these! The ones with the Columns if my favorite.
Love these…so beautiful and toucing…the last one is one of my favs…and the balck and white where she is kissing his neck is really killer
LOVE the texture in the first shot, the B&W… fantastic! man, it does look cold :) but as has been said – very touching shots. i also LOVE the pale, subtle color in the grassy field shots… beautiful!
Thanks Paul I love the pictures! Especially the one in the weeds with his head on mine!
Paul, this is a very cool shoot. I love the contrast between the section at the massive monument and the shots out in the field. Nicely done.
Fabulous! I simply love the fourth photo down. So intimite and soft.
I said on my (now old) blog that a big change was coming. As you’ve probably noticed, my site has been completely redesigned. The integration of social media was important for me to connect & share content with my clients. Also, the ability to post all of the content in one location, rather than multiple sites is very nice. I already have quite a few events I’ll be doing this spring and summer, so should be no shortage of content to write about. Additionally, I’ve had a few questions about how I edit my pictures, so I intend to pass on some of what I’ve learned and give an insight into what I see in my mind while I’m taking / editing pictures.
Not all of my content has been transferred over quite yet, but I am excited about the change and wanted to go ahead and make the switch. By next week, it should be complete though. I thank everyone for the kind words and compliments you’ve given me and I look forward to serving more of you in the future. If anything looks weird, doesn’t load, you’re unable to email me, or whatever–please let me know — [email protected] is my personal email. Also–let me know what you think about the switch–I’d love to hear your opinion.
I did two engagement sessions this weekend, and will have those posted soon. Here’s a preview of the one from last Tuesday evening.
awesome comp and perspective.
Hey Paul, I love the new blog. Very clean and chic. Also, that’s a beautiful couple portrait.
I cant wait to see the rest of the photos… This one looks great! It was such a pleasure to work with you, cant wait to see what you do at the wedding….
It looks great. Will be interested to see how the integration works out for you.
Stunning. I love the addition of the foreground. Clean and classy :) Keep it coming!
Looks great! Congrats on the new site.
site looks great! great shot too.
Great design. Matches this photo so well. Great use of negative space in both.
Beautiful! That’s a very well composed shot. I bet it would look AMAZING blown up HUGE!
In both this photograph and the new site, I really can get a sense of your style and personality. Lovely shot!
I recently had the opportunity to attend a workshop hosted by Chuck Arlund & Stephanie Zettl. Their work is really impressive and their use of off-camera lighting is what really interested me. It was great to meet up with about 15 other photographers and try out some new stuff.
It was an all day thing–a majority of the shooting took place at the Downtown Presbyterian Church in downtown Nashville. The current structure was built in 1848 and it had some incredible places to take pictures on some of the upper floors. Here are a few of my favorites. They all use some kind of off camera lighting w/ a good mix of the soft, ambient light. (seriously) Very little post-processing was done on these–that’s how awesome the light was. The one shot in the red hallway is my favorite and was done by having someone hold a video-light off camera left–it created a different, dramatic look that I really like. For those of you who are photographers: It’s neat b/c the hallway was nearly completely dark, and the video-light allowed me to shoot it at 1/30 f/2.8 400iso. I could have upped the iso or opened up my aperature (or both), for an even faster shutter speed, but I rolled with it. Please let me know what you think–I’m kind of new to off camera lighting so I’m always up for learning from those who have more experience.
I think these are very well done. The bottom two, in particular, have an intensity and dramatic feel to them that makes them stand out. Fantastic work!
Beautiful use of light. I think the first one is my favorite!
Beautiful! Very Bold.
Very nice lighting Paul. Glad the workshop was helpful!
Love Love Love these images!
Oh Im in love with these shots! I especially love the first shot, the lighting + bokeh = perfect!
amazing photos
The 2nd one down is really rich looking with the brown tones and the light. Gorgeous..
I love this set. The lighting is beautiful and interesting.
Was hoping Peyton Manning could pull out a miracle last night, but it didn’t happen. It was good for NoLA that the Saints won, though. The commercials in my opinion weren’t as good as they usually are. The Betty White snickers commercial was hilarious. The google ad was one of the most creative ads I’ve seen in a while–in under a minute they told a whole story and effectively sold their product. Good stuff.
Susie & Mitchell are getting married this spring and decided it would be cool to have some engagement pictures taken before the big day. We had a great time taking a few pictures on the pedestrian bridge in downtown Nashville (next to LP Field for you Titans fans) and finished off the day by visiting the Steeplechase in Belle Meade. The very first image is one of my favorite pictures ever.
I’m trying a little bit of a different format on this blog post–instead of a pop-up window, you have to actually scroll through the pictures to see them. If you haven’t seen the pop-up format, click on any picture in the previous posts or check out one of my latest posts on the snow that blew through here last week. Let me know what you think. More can be seen on paulrowlandphotography.com.
ADORE those first two color ones. They have a classic film quality to them that I love. Also loving your b&w conversions – great shoot!

Beautiful work here. I absolutely love the last one with them walking away, hand in hand. Really great stuff.
Oh! They have an English Setter! That’s exciting :D I LOVE English Setters. Beautiful dog. And the photos are pretty great also, I was just momentarily distracted by the dog. Lol great E-shoot.
I LOVE that 3rd one from the bottom – what great emotion :) I also love winter photos. There aren’t enough people willing to brave the cold.
